Lucas Rodriguez to return to Minnesota United FC in 2013
MINNEAPOLIS (March 8, 2013) — Minnesota United FC continues to maintain a core group of players that has spurred much of its on-field success the past two seasons, and midfielder Lucas Rodriguez will be a part of that after signing a new two-year contract with the club.
“The club is going through a lot of exciting changes right now with the new ownership, name, logo and colors, but it’s important to keep the same work ethic we’ve had the past few years,” Rodriguez said. “The new signings and our core group of guys are excited to try to win another championship.”
A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Rodriguez signed in Minnesota in 2010 after a collegiate career at MidAmerica Nazarene University. He bounced back from an early season sports hernia to contribute down the stretch in the team’s run to the 2012 North American Soccer League Championship Series, scoring his only goal in the second leg of the finals. He has made 56 appearances since 2010, recording six goals and four assists.
“It’s been great having Lucas in Minnesota and watching him grow in his career from a rookie to a true professional, and we as a coaching staff are very pleased that he’s continued to develop his career with Minnesota United FC,” United FC head coach Manny Lagos said.
Rodriguez will join United FC for preseason after the Missouri Comets complete their season in the Major Indoor Soccer League. The Comets begin their MISL playoff campaign tonight.
Minnesota United FC kicks off its season in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome on Saturday, April 6 against the San Antonio Scorpions. After playing five games in the Metrodome, United FC will play the remainder of the season at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. Single game ticket prices—which range from $6 to $30—are unchanged from the 2011 and 2012 seasons, thus providing everyone with the opportunity to be part of the professional soccer experience and enjoy the world’s most popular sport in person.
