MN United FC to host second-round US Open Cup match
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (May 7, 2013) — The second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is coming to Elizabeth Robbie Stadium in Roseville, Minn., as Minnesota United FC prepares for its run through the 100th edition of North American soccer’s oldest competition. United FC will host a game Tuesday, May 21, against the PDL’s Des Moines Menace.
The game will mark United FC’s first outdoor game in Minnesota this season. Originally scheduled for NSC Stadium in Blaine, the club chose to relocate the game to the University of Minnesota’s intimate outdoor venue after being warned of potential long-term damage to the NSC Stadium field, which is being partially reseeded after a long Minnesota winter.
Tickets for the second round match up will be available at the door for $5 for adults and $10 for youth. Season Ticket Members are also encouraged to contact the club to take advantage of an exclusive presale offer.
“The US Open Cup is an exciting challenge for us with the unfamiliar teams and quick turnarounds from our league games. That said, it’s a tournament we want and expect to do well in regardless of the opponent,” said United FC head coach Manny Lagos, who won the tournament as a player with the 1998 Chicago Fire.
United FC is among six US-based North American Soccer League clubs participating in the 2013 version of the tournament, which pits clubs from all levels of US Soccer against each other in a single-elimination tournament. All six NASL sides enter in the second round with a chance to progress to face Major League Soccer opposition in the third round at venues to be announced at a future date.
The 2012 US Open Cup was a memorable one for soccer fans in Minnesota. After defeating the Menace 2-0 in the second round, coach Lagos led the team to a 3-1 victory against MLS’ Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium before falling 1-0 on a late goal in the fourth round against MLS’ San Jose Earthquakes.
The Menace of the USL Premier Development League defeated the 56ers of the National Premier Soccer League 1-0 on Tuesday, May 14, at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines, Ia.
Story was updated May 17 to reflect first round results, venue change and ticketing details.
