Pablo Campos Wins NASL Player of the Week
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (June 10, 2013) – Striker Pablo Campos scored both goals to fire Minnesota United FC to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, which earned him the North American Soccer League Player of the Week honor.
With his side trailing 1-0, the Brazilian striker leveled the match for Minnesota by confidently converting a penalty kick past Fort Lauderdale goalkeeper Matt Glaeser in the 54th minute, hitting the top corner with a decisive spot finish. Campos then dramatically scored the game-winner deep into stoppage time as he headed home a Simone Bracalello cross to seal the victory as United remains in the hunt to host Soccer Bowl 2013.
“I’m happy to help the team,” said Campos, who signed for United from the San Antonio Scorpions, where he was the 2012 NASL Golden Boot winner, scoring 20 regular season goals. “There is pressure on me to score and I came here to score goals and that’s what I have to do. I was new here and people are starting to understand how I play and the moves I make and that takes some time. Hopefully that understanding can keep going.
“Everybody believes that I can step up and hopefully we can continue this and build on the win. The team understands the key to winning games”
Campos, who now has three goals and is tied in the team leading four assists this season, played with Carolina RailHawks (2011) and San Antonio Scorpions (2012) before joining the United FC this past January. A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he has also see action with the San Jose Earthquakes and Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer as well as Swedish club GAIS.
United FC coach Manny Lagos also commented: “It’s a great honor, it comes from a huge game for us, him stepping up and getting two goals and getting the game-winner. Certainly it’s a great individual accolade and the team’s fight and will to get three points on Saturday was a great result of Pablo’s will to get the winning goal.”
