Minnesota United FC Announces Events Surrounding Schwan’s USA CUP
United Will Host FC Edmonton Wednesday at 7:30 PM at NSC Stadium
MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota United FC will host fellow North American Soccer League (NASL) rival, FC Edmonton, in an exhibition match on July 17, 7:30 PM at NSC Stadium in Blaine, Minnesota. The game is one of numerous events Minnesota United will participate in surrounding Schwan’s USA CUP, the largest international youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere. The event, hosted at the National Sports Center, takes place July 12-20 this year.
“Pro soccer has been a mainstay in Minnesota for nearly 30 years, but that can only continue and thrive with a strong foundation at the youth level,” said Nick Rogers, Minnesota United FC President. “Fortunately, we have the strongest youth soccer organizations in the country, exemplified by the National Sports Center’s hosting of Schwan’s USA CUP. Current players like Brian and Brent Kallman participated in this tournament and I’m hopeful that one of the young players competing in this year’s competition will follow in their footsteps and proudly wear Minnesota United FC colors on the field someday.”
Minnesota United FC is taking part in several events during the week, where more than 1,000 youth teams from 17 countries are represented. Minnesota United players will participate in an Olympics-style parade and carry the U.S. flag onto the field as part of the opening ceremony on Tuesday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m. The exhibition match against FC Edmonton at the National Sports Center (NSC) is Wednesday, July 17, at 7:30 p.m.
Minnesota United players will also make an appearance at the Mall of America Rotunda Thursday, July 18, from 2 – 4 p.m., signing autographs, posing for photos and showing off their skills to youth soccer players and fans.
“We have a proud tradition of hosting one of the largest youth soccer tournaments in the world at the National Sports Center,” says Kara Radeke, Senior Director of Soccer and Field Sport Programs at the NSC, “We are excited Minnesota United will be participating in various events surrounding Schwan’s USA CUP, including the exhibition match on July 17. Seeing professional soccer is a true inspiration for the kids here and shows them the great opportunities in front of them.”
